How many years have you been in the game? Since I was about 7 so 29 years now. Favourite Track.? Addington Person most admired in harness racing? Not one really favoured person, I'm a fan of the smaller stables which keep this industry going. In your opinion the best driver in the game? David Butcher The Best Trainer in the game? Stats would suggest Mark Purdon, a stable I enjoy to follow would be Richard Aubury I believe he has the best eye for a horse (Yearling Sales) and is a seriously good trainer he typically tends to sell his horses before you get to see them in his colours. Best thing about harness racing? I've met some really good people, and I enjoy being involved and seeing a horse develop either one I bred or trained get to the races. Grass or grit? Grit as its more consistent but the dividends if you have one on the Grass its always great. Stand or mobile? Stand The biggest odds you've backed a horse that won? Colour Of My Love won at Westport paying around $40 Favourite bet type? I enjoy the each way but if there is a couple I like a two or three horse multi bet. What one horse would you have liked to own? Ricky Van or White Arrow they clearly weren't the best but boy did they give me some fun on the punt. What is your favourite race to see? New Zealand Cup What does the harness industry need more of? Increase in stakes and better drug control. What's the worst thing about the industry currently? They are getting better but development of improving courses facilities food etc to get people back on course. Aspirations for the future? I'd love to still be owning horses but I would love a good one like most of us. The most satisfying thing about TIPSTAR.CO.NZ? When you have mapped out a race everything goes to plan getting a collect. Tell us your worst bad luck story on the punt? Wouldn't want to bore everyone. Why do you consider yourself a good punter? I feel I pick and choose my races to punt on better than I ever used to. The most important thing about punting successfully? Discipline. TIPSTAR form analyst Ben First memory of harness racing? Probably going to the show at the old showgrounds and then taking in some of the show day races. Although I do remember vividly backing Game Paul each-way as about a 9 year old and seeing it win while on course at Banks Peninsula, that is probably my best early memory. How many years have you been in the game? I've been punting since I was a kid although most of that was through dads phone account. haha. Favourite Track.? Banks Peninsula, Methven great grass tracks both of them. . Person most admired in harness racing? Any person who acts with integrity and is a good communicator. In your opinion the best driver in the game? I backed Waipawa Lad to win the NZ Free for All the year he got up on the passing lane. Mark Jones drove a great race that day and i've always thought he was one of the best. Dexter obviously knows how to handle a horse too The Best Trainer in the game? I've got a few trainers I really respect when they get one to the track. Kevin Chapman always has a good strike-rate, Best thing about harness racing? Figuring out a race and having things pan out exactly the way you want them to. Grass or grit? Grass Stand or mobile? Stand. I'm a traditionalist The biggest odds you've backed a horse that won? I'm a value better generally so I've got a few at big odds. The biggest? Musgrove at 47/1 on show day, Moment of Truth at about the same. Innes Lad at 32/1 and Mornings Calling came in one night at about 50/1 Favourite bet type? Each-way all day What one horse would you have liked to own? Lord Module What is your favourite race to see? NZ Cup What does the harness industry need more of? Youngsters getting onto boards and club committees, there's a lot of dead wood in some organisations when this should be a young mans game What's the worst thing about the industry currently? Positive swabs and lack of racing numbers Aspirations for the future? Back more winners! The most satisfying thing about TIPSTAR.CO.NZ? Probably the fact that I take the trust factor seriously, when I tip a horse I have a reason for it. Tell us your worst bad luck story on the punt? I backed Chianti the night she broke down recently. Just a sickening feeling seeing a nice mare like her break down mid-race. Why do you consider yourself a good punter? I like to think I can pick a horse on condition well. I like being on course for that reason alone. The most important thing about punting successfully? Discipline |
