Listen to our main thoughts here...
RACE 1 12.05 GARRARDS HORSE & HOUND HANDICAP TROT $25,000, R56 & FASTER DISCRETIONARY, 3200m
An interesting but hard and even trot to line up in the first. We don't give any selections here.
Thoughts
The value would be on Ruthless Kayla for a place 2nd $4.60. ($6 fixed) She's a good stand start exponent and is a tough type when right and I think she'll see out the trip. I'm not sold on a few in this field and don't actually like the favourite in Over The Love. It's always a challenging start to cup day over the 3200m stand and we've ultimately left it alone. If you're looking into trebles then make sure you have a few on your ticket here.
Race 4 [1:35pm] LAURA FERGUSSON TRUST (JUNIOR) FREE-FOR-ALL MOBILE PACE (Gr3) $35,000, FFA, 2600m
We start to warm to our task now. 3 selections
#6 Sicario. Mark Purdon on and we do like him at value. (currently at $7) People have forgotten this horse and his quality. He's galloped and put in a fine performance in the Kaikoura cup in top company. The cup trial was very good and he's dished it up with the best of his age group before now. The 2600m is right in his wheelhouse. The composition of the field also makes it hard for the flying Henry Hubert to dictate terms which sees his price "unders" what it should be in our book. The All Stars have the horse power in the race to attempt to bully the field. We do like Sicario, strongly, on a each-way basis. 2nd $2.60
# 8 Pat's Delight. Undeniably brilliant horse who is destined for open class ranks for sure. He's also got a stack of gate-speed or a potent finish on him if needed. He represents the biggest threat to our top selection. He'll be hard to beat with any cover in the race. 3rd ND
#4 All U Need Is Faith. Is a talented type himself. Very strong cup trial. The stats give us a different reading though with indifferent results from early in his career when he had gait issues. I'd be keen to see him put into this and take a little bit of fire out of his competitors. Still good enough to feature late. 1st $3.10 1.80. Quinella $5.90. Trifecta $34.00
Race 5 [2:07pm] RNP HOMES LTD MOBILE PACE $25,000, 4YO & OLDER MARES UP TO & INCLUDING R62, 2600m
The field is a little bit open and actually looks like it lacks a little bit of depth to it here.
#9 Miss You. Appears to be the real quality of this field. You may get a slightly better quote on the day as to the current fixed odds price of $3.50 which I believe is a little short. She's tough and was forward enough when running 3rd to Ivana Flybye recently. Her previous workouts were also very sound. We do like her here. 2nd $1.70
#2 Kensington Kate. Interesting to see John Dunn take the drive here when Feel the Money is arguably the better of theirs? I selected this horse at Timaru last week and she may have been a tad under-done for that. I do like the draw.. Should provide a strong hand for the Dunn stable here. 1st $4.30 1.70. Quinella $7.60
Race 6 [2:42pm] GRANITE BENCHTOP COMPANY NZ TROTTING FFA (MOBILE TROT) (Gr1) $100,000, FFA, 1980m
#4 Speeding Spur. Is set to dictate things here with most of the main threats destined to start only in the Dominion on Friday. 1st $1.70 1.20
Other thoughts: Include Le Lievre's Gift 3rd $6.20
Race 7 [3:17pm] McMILLAN EQUINE FEEDS SIRES' STAKES SERIES FINAL MOBILE PACE (Gr1) $170,000, 3YO COLTS & GELDINGS, 1980m
# 12 Ultimate Sniper. Hard to go past given his Herculian efforts and runs over the last couple of starts. Natalie is seemingly in love with him and will ask him for his best effort today given he'll need to work hard to be there in the concluding stages from a poor draw. 1st $1.50 1.20. Quinella $3.60. Trifecta $46.00
# 4 Jesse Duke. Has been done on his best lately but still looked on the way up to our eye when run down last start. Tricky draw with the speed inside him dictating that a early lead may not be there for him. Good enough to challenge in one of the features today., 2nd $1.60
#2 Heisenberg. Loves a street fight and he'll get one today. Big and bold when leading although this draw also gives him options especially with the stablemate drawn next to him. 3rd $3.00
Race 8 [3:55pm] PASCOES THE JEWELLERS MOBILE PACE $25,000, R64 TO R80, R81 TO R90 WITH COND., 1980m
#8 Turn It up. The quality of this race and even with the poor draw looks likely to be good enough to work around them early and be hard to run down. 1st $1.40 1.10
Race 9 [4:33pm] AVON CITY FORD MOBILE PACE $25,000, 3YO & OLDER R48 TO R54, 1980m
#13 Bettor My Dreamz. Did enough at Ashburton and hits an even looking line-up here. The lack of mid-race tempo may allow him a chance to get around into a prominent position here. 1st $1.50 1.20.
Race 10 [5:12pm] CHRISTCHURCH CASINO NZ TROTTING CUP (STAND PACE) (Gr1) $800,000, FFA, 3200m
#5 Dream About Me. Looks the best each-way chance int the cup this year. Proven staying mare who is drawn well. May hand up if leading to The Fixer? Genuine and has the manners to play a major part. 3rd $1.80
#1 The Fixer. Natalie stays with him so he must be respected. The #1 draw isn't the best situation but he'll certainly be in this if able to get into a leading or parked position. 1st $3.70 1.70. Quinella $6.90. Trifecta $47.80. First Four $219.80
#2 Cruz Bromac . The x factor performance of the cup preludes has been this horse at Methven when he swept on into things. The scratching of Ulitmate Machete has meant he's got the services of Mark Purdon and that is a plus. Could be the surprise packet in this years cup finish. 4th
#13 Tiger Tara. Super staying type but he's draw awfully really and that may mean the task ahead is simply too much to ask for. He'll be put into the race no doubt. 2nd $1.80
Race 11 [5:49pm] DRYMIX CEMENT TROT $25,000, 3YO & OLDER R48 TO R60, 2600m
#7 Kings Landing Is the one to beat but I'm not all that sold on his overall quality. If he's able to start well and get to the lead he'll be hard to beat though. 1st $1.70 1.30
Race 12 [6:25pm] BLUE STAR TAXIS MOBILE PACE $25,000, 3YO & OLDER R55 TO R63, 1980m
#7 Smokin By. He's got the gate-speed to get across them early today and be a factor. The run behind Henry Hubert was ok and I expect a little improvement into this. Can over-race but the short trip will suit and he should be competitive. 1st $4.50 2.10
#11 Nandolo. Very good cup trial. Is a rolling type and will be around them mid-race to put some heat into the contest. Can win at value. 3rd $1.80
Other thoughts Include Malik. 2nd $2.20
